By bringing together a strong group of leaders from local government, the federal government and a number of domestic and international civic intermediary organizations, this dialogue will facilitate collaborative action and chart a course forward for Canadian cities on climate change in the context of COP26.

COLLABORATION

Secure global net-zero and keep the global warming limit of 1.5°C from the Paris Agreement within reach.

The world needs to halve emissions in 10 years. Current global commitments would result in warming above 3°C.

Act on adaptation and support those most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Finance and planning needs to be in place, with open communication between nations and protection of natural habitats.

Developed countries must raise at least $100 bn per year in climate finance to support developing nations.

Work with the private sector to unleash trillions in finance and ensure investment decisions are made after accounting for climate.

Finalize the Paris Rulebook and find a solution on carbon markets, resolve issues of transparency, and broker an agreement that drives global ambition.

Turn ambition into action in this decade by fostering cooperation between government, civil society, and the private sector on climate action.

ambition through a

renewed NDC + demonstrate that we are serious about climate action.

2

A space to showcase Canadian innovation in mitigation,

adaptation, and financing structures that support moving beyond our NDC.

3

A new opportunity to grow from the pandemic and signal a

shift from business as usual to new ambition and economic development for Canada.

FOR
CANADA'S
CITIES

COP26 is where local governments can engage in multi-national dialogue, but importantly, can also engage in national dialogue with the federal government.

With ~60% of GHG emissions under the direct or indirect control of local governments, cities are important allies in the multi-level collaboration needed to address this emergency.
